Clinical Transparency & Medical Boundaries

Medical & Scientific Disclaimer

Refyn exists to bring transparency to internet self-care advice by categorizing habits against published research. Refyn is not a clinical medical service, and its protocols are not substitutes for professional clinical judgment.

Last Clinical Review: September 2026 · Protocol Version 1.0
No Doctor-Patient Relationship

The information presented through Refyn—including protocol guidelines, duration metrics, anatomical targets, AI Coach analysis, and curated video critiques—is provided solely for educational and organizational purposes. Using this application does not establish a doctor-patient, therapist-client, or other healthcare provider relationship.

The Refyn Evidence Classification System

Every habit, exercise, and video critique in Refyn is systematically audited and tagged with one of three transparent evidence tiers. We never publish an unclassified protocol:

Clinically supported
Clinically Supported

Backed by published, peer-reviewed human clinical trials or systematic reviews demonstrating statistically significant, reproducible physiological outcomes (e.g. broad-spectrum UV protection against photoaging).

Mechanism plausible
Mechanism Plausible

Grounded in sound physiological, anatomical, or dermatological principles, supported by preliminary pilot trials or animal data, but lacking massive multi-center RCT validation (e.g. rosemary oil microcirculation).

Anecdotal
Anecdotal

Widely promoted across social media and digital forums with vocal testimonials, but uncorroborated by controlled literature. Listed transparently so users understand the true scientific basis.

High-Risk Physical Caveats & Contraindications

1. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Stress

Intense jaw-clenching protocols or high-resistance mastication devices can produce severe mechanical microtrauma to the fibrocartilage disc of the temporomandibular joint. If you experience jaw clicking, crepitus, ear fullness, or masseter muscle spasms, cease resistance exercises immediately and consult an oral maxillofacial specialist.

2. Craniofacial & Dental Malocclusion

Improper palatal tongue posture—such as aggressive anterior dental pushing rather than light suction against the posterior hard and soft palate—can cause anterior tooth tipping or open bite malocclusions. Anyone undergoing active orthodontic therapy must follow their orthodontist's directives.

3. Cutaneous Barrier Damage

Aggressive physical exfoliation, improper gua sha technique, or undiluted essential oils can compromise the stratum corneum, resulting in transepidermal water loss, irritant contact dermatitis, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Always conduct 48-hour patch tests before topical application.

Mandate to Route to Healthcare Professionals

Refyn explicitly delegates medical conditions to qualified practitioners. You must seek clinical evaluation for:

  • Persistent cystic acne, rosacea, or suspicious pigmented cutaneous lesions.
  • Sudden, diffuse, or patchy hair loss (telogen effluvium, alopecia areata).
  • Severe facial asymmetry accompanied by neuromuscular numbness or pain.
  • Disordered eating thoughts, caloric restriction obsession, or severe body dysmorphic distress.
